Valley City State University Interim President Allen Burgad said on Mar. 10 that the university’s commitment to being student-focused and learning-centered is rooted in its people and relationships.
Burgad outlined the core values of Valley City State University, which include placing students at the center of decisions, fostering innovation, developing a culture of lifelong learning, encouraging collaboration, and promoting engagement. He said these values are not just statements but are deeply embedded in daily actions across campus.
Reflecting on his recent conversations with faculty and staff, Burgad said he quickly recognized how central the student-focused value is to the university’s work. “It is a deeply embedded value that guides the work we do every day,” he said.
Burgad also referenced Simon Sinek’s book “Leaders Eat Last,” noting that successful organizations create environments where people feel valued and supported. He said this approach leads to greater collaboration and innovation within the university community.
He emphasized that faculty mentor students both academically and socially, while staff provide support to help students overcome challenges and pursue opportunities. Burgad said these relationships often make the difference between a student simply attending college or truly belonging to a community.
Looking ahead, Burgad stated that Valley City State University’s future will continue to be shaped by those who believe in its mission—including faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community partners. “By continuing to invest in one another, we ensure that Valley City State University remains a place where students learn, grow, and prepare to make a difference in the world,” he said.
