Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, used her social media platform on September 19, 2025, to comment on recent votes regarding a potential federal government shutdown and to highlight statements from Democratic colleagues about its possible consequences.

In one post, Fedorchak stated that "EVERY House Democrat but one just voted AGAINST keeping the federal government open. Shutting down the government hurts seniors, farmers, veterans, and working families—and House Democrats know it. In fact, here’s what the Democrats have said in their own words:" (September 19, 2025).

She went on to quote Rep. Hakeem Jeffries: ".@RepJeffries: 'It's about the harm... Families will be hurt. Farmers will be hurt… The ability of everyday Americans to visit their family, their friends, their loved ones will be impacted. Border security and border patrol agents will not be paid. TSA agents will not be paid.'" (September 19, 2025).

Fedorchak also referenced comments from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: ".@RepAOC: 'It is not normal to shut down the government when we don’t get what we want.'" (September 19, 2025).

Federal government shutdowns occur when Congress fails to pass funding legislation for federal agencies and programs. During these periods, many government operations halt or scale back significantly. Essential workers such as border security personnel and TSA agents may continue working without pay until funding is restored. These disruptions can impact a wide range of Americans including seniors who rely on federal services, farmers dependent on agricultural support programs, veterans seeking benefits, and working families affected by delayed services.

The debate over government funding has been a recurring issue in U.S. politics with both parties frequently attributing blame to each other for any lapses in appropriations.
