Merton is the 47th recipient of the North Dakota Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award, the state's highest commendation for its citizens. The founder of the International Music Camp graduated from VCSU in 1940 with a composite science degree in music education. He was inducted into the VCSU Music Hall of Fame in 2008 and he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1979.
