Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate that the older adult population in the United States is continuing to increase while younger age groups decline. From 2020 to 2024, the number of Americans ages 65 and older grew by 13%, compared with a 1.7% drop in those under 18. The country’s older adult population has expanded greatly over the past century, rising from 4.9 million people in 1920 to over 61 million in 2024.
A 2021 analysis found that about half of this age group—nearly 28 million individuals—may need long-term services and supports, with more than a third potentially requiring nursing home care at some point.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
