Valley City State University announced on Apr. 27 that its Prairie Waters Education and Research Center will host three separate summer camps in 2026, aimed at students from grades five through twelve to learn about water ecosystems.
The camps are designed to give students hands-on experiences with aquatic environments while participating in various educational and recreational activities. Registration is now open, and university officials encourage early sign-up as spots may fill quickly.
The STEM Explorers: Water Research Institute camp is scheduled for June 9-11, offering high school students the chance to participate in different sessions each day. Activities include collecting water samples from local lakes and streams, identifying aquatic insects and mussels, and sampling fish to study their diets and age. There is no cost for this camp, and participants can receive up to $75 in mileage reimbursement.
For younger students entering fifth or sixth grade, the Splashin’ Around at Prairie Waters camp will take place July 20-22. This program includes wading in streams, a water hunt to discover local aquatic life, stream health lessons with water testing, and other outdoor activities. The registration fee is $95, covering lunch, snacks, a t-shirt, transportation from campus each day (departing at 8 a.m., returning at 5 p.m.), with financial assistance available upon request.
Fishin’ Around the Prairie Waters runs July 27-29 for those entering seventh or eighth grade. Campers will explore fish habitats by canoeing on the Sheyenne River, boat fishing, catching fish without rods, and engaging in additional outdoor experiences. The fee structure mirrors that of Splashin’, including meals and transportation.
These programs aim to connect young people with nature while providing practical science education opportunities during the summer months.
