North Dakota State senior Zach McGlynn is in 11th place after the first day of the heptathlon at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, according to a March 13 announcement from Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The event is significant as it determines which athletes will earn All-America honors, with the top eight finishers receiving first-team recognition. McGlynn finished Friday’s four events with a total of 3,225 points, matching his previous score after four events on January 30 when he set his school record and personal best.
During Friday’s competition, McGlynn ran the 60-meter dash in 7.24 seconds, jumped 23 feet, 7.5 inches (7.20 meters) in the long jump, threw a career-best of 44 feet, 8.25 inches (13.62 meters) in the shot put, and cleared six feet, nine inches (2.06 meters) in the high jump. His high jump performance tied for second-best among all competitors while his shot put mark ranked fifth-best.
McGlynn is only 17 points behind eighth place as he heads into Saturday’s final three events: the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault, and 1000 meters. The conclusion of these events will determine if he secures All-America honors.
The final day of competition will begin at 11 a.m. Central Time on Saturday and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
